Recently, I had a chance to get what I thought was a pretty good deal on a new Microsoft Zune. I received the Zune on Saturday and finally had a chance to hook it up to charge last night and load some music this morning. I figured that as a second release generation from Microsoft, it should be past some of the past problems. Besides – flight simulation software and hardware have been the only 2 categories I’ve felt Microsoft has ever been good at.
Let me just get out of the way now my opinion that this is the absolute worst MP3 player available on the market right now. If this is the best Microsoft can do in the 2nd generation, it’s no wonder Apple and (significantly behind but still far better than other options) Sansa are leading the media player market.
Now, for some of the “Why is that?” answers.
I haven’t had a chance to test the social aspects of the player. I doubt I ever will, but if I get a chance I’ll post again on my thoughts. I can say right now that if this is all Microsoft has come up with after having years to see what Apple is doing, there isn’t much incentive for other media player producing companies to strive to create better devices or interfaces. I don’t think Microsoft should just copy what Apple has done, but I think following Apple’s model of braindead simple to use is the right way to go. Microsoft needs to get someone who understands gadget use by non-gadget freaks, as the Zune makes it clear no one at the company currently has that idea wrapped up.
I have more thoughts, but want to wait until I’ve used to player a bit more before making some comments I’m mulling right now.

I am not a Facebook user. The whole social web thing eludes me, although that may primarily be due to my moderately reclusive nature. But I know that Facebook and other social media sites are big with many, many people on the web. However, keep in mind that others are also aware of the draw of social media sites. These people may not use the sites for themselves, but there is a real possibility that they will check up on your use of the sites. For instance, if you tell your boss you can’t make it in to work for a family emergency one day, it might not be wise to post pictures to Facebook of yourself in your fairy costume at a party right after you miss work.
Kevin Colvin, an intern at Anglo Irish Bank’s North American arm, was busted when he told his manager, Paul Davis, that he’d miss work due to a “family emergency”. Davis turned up the photo above, freshly posted to Facebook from the Halloween party Colvin apparently missed work to attend, and attached it to his reply, copying the rest of the office as he did it. The email thread is now spreading around the net.
I agree with the boss – that is a cool wand. My kids would probably have fun if I had one of those.

By the way – I found out on Monday of this week that I got it. So if it seems slower than normal, it’s because I’m focusing on getting ready for it.

On occasion, I find a headline that I hate to pass up. Most days now, I’ll just post it to RandomLi, my other blog. However, some are good enough to gather posting line there as well as get a full post here. I present to you “Elephants electrocuted in drunken rampage.”
GAUHATI, India – Six Asiatic wild elephants were electrocuted as they went berserk after drinking rice beer in India’s remote northeast, a wildlife official said Tuesday.
How do elephants get drunk? Well:
Some found beer, which farmers ferment and keep in plastic and tin drums in their huts, said Sunil Kumar, a state wildlife official.
So I stand by my post title and wonder – do drunken elephants see pink elephants? Or is that limited to humans that have seen Fantasia?

I just learned that the voice of Portal’s GLaDOS is classically trained operatic soprano Ellen McLain (via Kotaku)
A cow-orker shared this with me a couple of weeks back, but I forgot to check on it until just recently. Those of you who watch American Idol may already be familiar with the British television show Britain’s Got Talent. It operates like our American Idol, Simon Cowell included (although I believe their show came first), except pretty much any category of performance can be seen.
Earlier this year, an unassuming looking fellow named Paul Potts was on the show. By profession, he is a cell phone salesman. He has a dream of performing opera. Watch him turn the disbelieving looks from the judges in to congratulations. Even Cowell is obviously impressed
After this performance, he continued on through the competitive steps of the show. Getting more recognition presumably set him up to dress more appropriately for the performance he gives. By this time, there is no doubt as to his talent, and here he is performing in the semi-finals for the show. Continue reading “Paul Potts – Cell phone salesman, incredible opera singer”
My wife and I are hoarders. We get stuff and have trouble doing away with it. This leads to a shamefully messy house, and excessive need for storage. We’ve tried all manner of overcoming the problem, but without a consistent effort, we pretty much fall back into over-collecting soon after clean-ups. I’m going to give it another shot, after having found Zen Habits’ 15 tips to declutter.
13. Internalize that your value is not in your “stuff”. It is just “stuff”. And realize that your value grows when you share your “stuff”. Hoarding is a selfish act.
I think this one really applies to me. I tend to buy when I’m stressed or down. Some people eat – I spend. Bad Randy.
1. Declutter for 15 minutes every day. It’s amazing how much you can get through if you just do it in small increments like this.
One of the reasons why I like this list so much is almost everything on there is as simple as this opening step. I can much more easily stick to it if it is easy and I can start with a low commitment. Much like I’ve been most successful sticking to day-after-day of frozen dinners with known calorie counts, I think I can be more successful decluttering and cleaning if I do small increments of clean-up daily with a room-by-room cleaning plan.

I just shamelessly stole this picture from the Deadly Computer blog.
I’m sure that will offend someone.
