Privacy enhanced computer display

If you work on anything where you really need to protect what is displayed from inadvertant viewing, perhaps you need one of Mitsubishi’s new privacy enhanced computer displays. The short explanation of how the display works is that it rapidly draws the intended image along with the inverse of that image. You wear special glasses to screen out the inverse image, but anyone without the glasses synced to your display only sees grey static due to the blending of the two images.

Worth1000 Star Wars celebrities contest

I just spent a little bit of time catching up on Worth1000 contests. I didn’t like many of the recent ones, honestly, but going back about a week came on a winning contest with scads of entries – Star Wars scenes with other celebrities in them. There are 10 pages of entrants, and the first has a good handful of really cool pictures. Here’s a new Yoda that just twists the character a touch. Zune vs. iPod images

zune_vs_ipod_7.jpgThe folks at TechEBlog have put up a few images showing the Zune and the iPod side by side so you can get a better look at the devices. While the Zune is larger in all respects, it sounds like it is lighter than the iPod. And that makes me wonder how durable the device is. I must say, however – that Zune screen looks pretty sexy.

Mythbusters defeat “Never been beaten” digital lock

(via Engadget)

I love watching Mythbusters. My favorite myth to date is probably the chicken gun myth (which they confirmed to be true), although there are so many other good ones that are close. This video of a recent Mythbusters shows the guys defeating a digital fingerprint lock with a latex copy of a fingerprint, a ballistics gel copy, and finally a photocopy with a little water on it. This doesn’t mean defeating this types of locks is trivial, but it does show that these types of locks aren’t as foolproof safe as many people believe them to be.

Of course, this type of testing has been done before. It’s just more fun watching the Mythbusters do it.

House vent cover decoration

I wouldn’t normally believe a story like this, but I’ve found Snopes to be reliable enough to trust something is real when confirmed on Snopes.

If you run into trouble with your neighbors, perhaps building vent covers on the side of your house that look like this isn’t the best thing you can do.  On the other hand, I’m sure it feels good for a little while to let everyone know how you feel.

Pictures that lie

A revealing look at photos that lie over at C|Net’s News.com. With the article is a collection of 24 altered pictures, some shown with the original un-doctored image, and an explanation of what and why alterations were made. Some of the changes are minor, while others are fairly substantial modifications of photos.

The article starts with this original and modified photo of Katie Couric, and shows other photos sometimes changed for intentional dramatic effect, sometimes for humorous story-telling, and sometimes just to allow more image to be viewed in a limited sized picture.
